E-BULLETIN AND UPDATE (PFUMC 10-25-09 GP1)

-1-  100 PEOPLE were present to worship God and to celebrate Pastor Greg’s last Sunday as our pastor. The title of his last sermon was “What I’ve Learned in a Nutshell.”  Martha Button, Don Hughes, Michele Rechberger, the Church Choir, Eric Kelly and Elise Kelly each contributed to the musical offerings of the morning. The children helped Pastor Greg distribute tokens of his love and appreciation for each congregation member and friend. The Retirement Dinner, which followed worship, was spectacular and the retirement cake beautiful and delicious! Thanks to Judy Milhollen and the entire SPRC!

-2-  MONDAY (tomorrow) – Pastor Jones will be present in the afternoon; Pastor Greg will be in West Seneca most of the day.

-3-  THIS TUESDAY Pastor Greg will be doing the final cleaning out of his desk, his files, and his electronic files, and moving boxes in the late afternoon with the help of Fred Willis. This is the last day to reach Pastor Greg at the pfumc.pastor@frontier.com email address.

-4-  THIS WEDNESDAY the pastor’s office is scheduled for cleaning and painting, so neither pastor will have office hours.

-5-  THIS THURSDAY Pastor Jones is scheduled to move into the office and begin and finish his work on Sunday’s Worship. Pastor Greg will be working out of his home and available at 880-0500 or greg_franklin@frontiernet.net except when out on visitation.

-6-  THIS THURSDAY Pastor Greg will be meeting with the Thursday Bible Study for the last time as its pastor from 7 to 8 pm in the church parlor.

-7-  NEXT SUNDAY is the first worship service with Pastor Jones and we will be celebrating Holy Communion. (Then-Retired Pastor Greg will begin 3 weeks of vacation and will not be present in worship for those weeks.)

Help is Needed (GP1)

Our Church will need to fill two important positions on our Administrative Council in time for the election of officers on Dec. 3, 2009 at 7 pm in the parlor.

The first is Membership Secretary.  This person is responsible for collecting information received from Sunday Bulletins, Monthly Newsletters, E-Bulletins, and the pastor and then recording the information in our permanent written record book. The information includes: new members received, members transferred, members deceased, births to members, baptisms and weddings. The work is recording individual pieces of information only and does not include maintaining the membership or mailing lists. Please pray about serving as our volunteer Membership Secretary and doing this essential work in the life of a church. Perhaps you would like a friend to join you in this work. If so, we would be willing to elect you as Co-Secretaries of Membership. Pastor Greg will be working next week (week of Oct. 25) on completing a Nominations Report for the Charge Conference. Please contact him as soon as possible if the Spirit is gently speaking to you.  greg_franklin@frontiernet.net  585-880-0500.

The second is Lay Member to Annual Conference.  In much the same way that we elect our village and town leaders and expect them to vote for the welfare of our community, the Lay Member of Annual Conference is elected to represent us at both the District level and the Conference level of the church. (District Conference is 2 to 2 ½ hours; Annual Conference is 3 to 4 days with expenses paid by our local church.) We are not only in need of representation, but the experience of attending Annual Conference is usually very uplifting and inspirational. We have the opportunities to experience different types of large-group worship, hear national and international speakers who bring dynamic messages, and meet new friends from WNY. We simply ask that you bring back a report of what you thought to be the most important highlights of the event which may be delivered to us in the Newsletter or directly to the congregation depending on your preference. During the year, you serve as a resource person to help us understand the decisions made at District and Annual Conference which affect us. – Please pray about serving as our volunteer Lay Member to Conferences and doing this essential work in the life of a church. Pastor Greg will be working next week (week of Oct. 25) on completing a Nominations Report for the Charge Conference. Please contact him as soon as possible if the Spirit is gently speaking to you.  greg_franklin@frontiernet.net  585-880-0500.

Sunday, Sunday....

A PASTORAL RESPONSE to the article written by the Rev. Jim Rigby and enclosed in today’s bulletin:

I have taken my own advice to others and re-read the article from several different perspectives. The introduction to the article includes this line: “Rigby, pastor of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, was asked to speak about the ethical dimensions of health care. Rigby says he tried to go beyond short-term political strategizing and ask more basic questions.”

I personally believe that he did not accomplish what he was “asked” to do, nor did he accomplish what he said he “tried” to do. Had Rigby accomplished what he set out to do, it would have been a major contribution to the discussion. Instead of setting forth a professional ethical format and instead of remaining free from “hot-button” terminology, he becomes “preachy” and biased, and resorts to an inflammatory style. Although his illustrations should either be stated as his own personal experience or at least referenced or documented, he chooses instead to resort to the vague “they say” and “they believe.” This “us” and “them” style, in my opinion, is counter-productive to reasonable discussion.

All of that said, I believe that most of us have our own frame of reference and most always read and understand within that frame of reference, myself definitely included. My frame of reference for this article included these factors: (1) I took a fellow believer at his word concerning his true intensions and overlooked his fallible indiscretions—since 100% agreement is quite rare anyway; (2) I kept referencing Jesus’ words—“feed the poor, clothe the naked, heal the sick, visited the imprisoned” and “heard” them throughout his article; (3) I believe in the mission and calling of both the Old and New Testament prophets, including Jesus, who refused to allow the political world to take over issues of God’s realm and God’s rule over it. For a Biblical Prophet, “feeding the poor, clothing the naked, healing the sick, and visiting the imprisoned” is God’s realm whether or not it has been stolen by the political world. As God’s realm, it (or at a minimum, its discussion) belongs in God’s church. Rigby’s article alludes to this throughout. Even if the political world starts the argument or issue, the church—the prophets of God—must not shy away from it because its true ownership is with God and not politicians. Healing the sick is God’s issue—the way it is brought about is up for reasonable discussion.

In summary:  Even as an article with such bias and shock value, Rigby’s contains enough validity to serve as a discussion-starter if a group is also able to discuss the differing ways he might have gone about expressing his views. A group might also want to examine and discuss their perception of his sincerity and/or boorishness. Most importantly, as individuals and as discussion groups, we must each come to terms as to the relationship (or non-relationship) between “healing the sick” and the so-called “universal health care.” Historically, our church forefathers believed that “healing the sick” meant building hospitals where all were welcomed. These great institutions were sponsored by the church and named after its prophets, apostles, and theology (such as Mercy or Grace). Then the church and its people allowed court cases, the government, profit-making and non-profit groups to take over and/or have final say about our hospitals (including closing them). We handed over Christ’s call to us to “heal the sick” to the government and others, but will God hold us responsible for what they do (or don’t do) for his people?  If Rigby’s article makes you mad enough to talk about it, perhaps it has accomplished one of its unstated goals.

-3- PRAYERS for Jim Prince who was seriously injured this week on the job while in the act of helping an individual. Prayers also for his dad, Joe, in need of healing grace. Joe and Jim and the husband and son of the late Mollie Prince, who faithfully served our church.

-4- HOLY COMMUNION – Your Worship Team, your Church Nurses, your Pastor and your Communion Stewards and Servers strongly share your continuing concerns with regards to the preparation and serving of Holy Communion. Our goal is to be as germ-free as possible, particularly during this pandemic of H1N1 Flu, but at all times for those with compromised immune systems, poor vision, and poor eye-hand coordination. The Worship Committee has agreed that the use of the small juice cups is a wise precaution. They also agreed that germs could also be avoided by having the communion servers and/or pastors (1) cleanse their hands in full view of the congregation or use latex gloves, and (2) use a solitary loaf of bread, place the torn piece of bread (torn only by the publicly-cleansed-hand server) into the palm of each outstretched hand without touching their skin—even if gloved. (Pre-cut bread squares are counter-productive to this effort.) The Worship Team meets next on Nov. 12 at 10 am in the parlor. (All United Methodist meetings are open to the congregation except SPR meetings which deal with personnel issues.)

-5- THURSDAY BIBLE STUDY meets from 7 to 8 this evening at the Griswold home to begin J. Ellsworth Kalas’ Life from the UpSide—Seeing God at Work in the World. All are welcome!

-1-  INTERIM PASTOR APPOINTED – Bishop Marcus Mathews has announced the appointment of the Reverend Wilson Jones to Perry First United Methodist Church as Interim Pastor effective November 1, 2009.  Lay Leader Judy Milhollen made the verbal announcement in today’s worship service as it was simultaneously announced in Avon UMC where Pastor Jones has served since 2007. Wilson and his wife, Allyson will continue to live and commute from Avon during their time with us as Interim.

-2-  85 PERSONS were in worship today to welcome each other back from the summer and to begin the fall commitment of worship. Pastor Greg spoke on the subject of Self-Denial but approached it from the teachings of Jesus on the difference between human thinking and divine thinking suggesting we must first deal with how this teaching speaks to us as individuals before we can seriously consider the “hows” and “how much’s” of Self-Denial which is actually commitment to Christ and his Gospel. The service was opened with one strong upbeat praise song and two praise songs which led us comfortably into prayer.

-3-  ALSO TODAY we welcomed back our beautiful and talented Choir along with its renowned Choir Director, Don Hughes. This was Don’s first time back in church since late spring when he suffered a stroke. The Choir and Don drew applause throughout the service. Both Don and Judy Milhollen shared kind words of working with Pastor Greg who will retire and become both a “former pastor” and a “parishioner” on Nov. 1.

-4-  CORRECTION Please Note!Ages for the classes in Sunday School were printed erroneously in the last E-Bulletin from yesterday. The two classes should have appeared divided up as follows: Age 3 - Grade 2 and Grade 3 - Age 13. Teachers for Age 3 - Grade 2 are Jen Keller (237-3349), Kellie Milhollen (237-5243), and Pam Sahrle (237-3287). Teacher for Grade 3 - Age 13 is Jane Pascoe (237-2015). The Live B.I.G. curriculum is a DVD-based resource designed to excite and enrich your children’s spiritual lives by bringing their everyday real world experience into Sunday School. Children attend worship for the first 15 minutes and then dismiss to their classes which began today, Sept. 13. Welcome!

Updates--Flood Recovery via UMC (GP1)

Updates on the Flood Recovery

Under the leadership of our Conference Disaster Response Coordinator Carl Chamberlain the Western New York Annual Conference  Disaster Team - consisting of Bishop Matthews, Larry Lundgren as DCM, Barbara Gasiewicz as Treasurer and Carl - have been monitoring the flood damage in the Gowanda – Silber Creek –Springville Area, and coordinating the response of the UMC there.    Marilyn Kasperek has supported the team in her role as Conference Communications officer.

An update on the situation:

1.Red Cross teams were immediately on the scene, but have now left.

2.The Salvation Army continues to offer a volunteer and community feeding program in Gowanda and operates a distribution warehouse from the Old Fire Hall there. They plan to close their operations this coming weekend.

3.Local hands on disaster response, a disaster volunteer coordination and management team has been instrumental in bringing information, volunteers and resources together in Gowanda but will be leaving early next week at the latest.
As our denominational disaster representative, Carl has meet with similar persons from Lutheran Disaster Services, Presbyterian Disaster Response, the United Church of Christ disaster representatives, and the area Church World Service disaster specialist several times during the last three weeks.  Meetings with local ministerium members are scheduled for September 2 and 3 in Gowanda and Silver Creek respectively to begin coordinating and building both a Long-Term Recovery team and an Un-met Needs Committee. These groups will respond to the remaining needs in the community as other resource partners leave and will assist those disaster victims who have yet to be identified.  Pastor Rebecca Ward, appointed to the Northern Chautauqua Cooperative Parish has been actively involved with the ministerium and led some of the local church responses.

4.An estimated 150 additional damaged homes have been reported in West Valley which was not known previously.   Other homes will probably be added to the list are anticipated as the disaster continues to play out.

5.The response has been coordinated through regular conference calls with the State Emergency Management Office and VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster) which are still being held twice weekly.  Carl participates on behalf of our Conference and as a long-term member of NYVOAD.

6 The evening news of Sept. 1 reported a FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Administration) declaration of $50 Million in Public Assistance (PA) for the flood damaged area.  These funds will NOT available for individuals but are to be used by the municipalities to offset their current investment in recovery and to assist with rebuilding needs as roads, bridges, and municipal infrastructure (water, sewer systems, etc.) are repaired or replaced.

7. Plans are currently being advanced to ask FEMA to grant "Individual Assistance" (IA) funds in addition to those above.  This funding would be the most important FEMA aid to families and could potentially open up low-interest loans and grants to the poor.  Without IA in the FEMA declaration the needs for donations to faith groups and service organizations becomes even more critical to the long term recovery.

8.12,000 flood buckets were delivered from Church World Service the first week of the disaster followed by an additional 18,000 from the UMC Mission Central Warehouse the second week.  They have made a significant difference in the lives of many throughout the area.

9.Our Conference disaster fund of $16,000 has been augmented by an UMCOR $10,000 grant requested by Bishop Matthews.  The UMCOR grant would be refunded should donations exceed $10,000.  As our churches send their donations we will continue to help our neighbors toward recovery and wholeness.  We have already used these funds to supply our Early Response Teams led by Charlie Hodges and Tom & Linda Cooper in the first mud-out efforts.  Shovels, mops, a heavy-duty pump able to pump mud and other supplies have been purchased.  The next significant financial need will be in the rebuilding stage.

10. The Springville UMC has provided housing space for out of area volunteers.  At least three small teams from other Conferences in the NEJ that have worked in the affected area.  A team from the Central Pa Conference plans to come in late September or October.

 Future needs:

1.We continue to request that monetary donations be sent to our Conference office.  Those donations will ultimately be administered by the long term recovery group made up of pastors and community members in the affected area who know best the needs of their neighbors.  Our financial and administrative resources will be available cooperatively with similar donations and volunteers from other denominations in order to avoid duplication and offer the best stewardship of those precious gifts.

2.Volunteers are still needed as the clean up stage winds on and assistance is given to homeowners, particularly the poor and elderly, to restore their homes for the winter.  As local United Methodists volunteer their services, they have been deployed in Gowanda and Silver Creek.  Volunteer teams will be needed throughout the fall and winter.

Please call (Cell # 607-382-1403) or e-mail (RevCarl2@lycos.com) with any questions.

RE: Help With WNY Floods (GP1)

Dear Friends,

In response to inquiries, the following are some of the current actions by Western New York United Methodists and help in which you can engage:

Flooding Response in Western NY

Severe flash flooding occurred in the Western NY communities of Gowanda and Silver Creek, over the past weekend. The immediate need is for clean-up teams to assist with the debris and mud removal from basements.  Volunteers do not have to be ERT trained, but do need to understand that this is the early phase of the recovery.  Long-term rebuilding will follow in the months ahead.

Housing and meals are available for volunteers.  Housing is at First UMC - Springville NY - contact Kyle Kuhn at 716-592-7451.   To find out about placement needs, contact Rev. Carl Chamberlain (Disaster Response Coordinator for WNY) at revcarl2@lycos.com  or 716-434-7385.

The work for right now is cleanup of mud and basement debris - volunteers do not have to be ERT trained but do need to understand that this is the early phase of the recovery.  Long-term rebuilding will follow in the months ahead.

Us: Clean Up Efforts in Western NY

UMCOR is supporting Erie, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties in the Western New York Annual Conference as they recover from extensive flood damage. The area of Silver Creek, Gowanda and Springville were particularly affected by flooding that occurred August 8-11, 2009

In addition to a $10,000 emergency grant, UMCOR, in partnership with Mission Central in Central Pa, is sending 1,800 cleaning buckets to help with the cleanup efforts. They are also sending 672 health kits and 336 school kits.

You can support recovery in Western NY and other flood affected areas by making a contribution to US Domestic Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #901670 or by giving to WNY Conference and writing WNY Flood Relief in the memo line.

-5-  REMEMBER THOSE on our prayer list and others in need of relief and healing in their lives.

-----end-----

E-BULLETIN (PFUMC 08-16-09 GP1)

-1-  THOSE IN WORSHIP this morning heard Part 1 of Esau and Jacob.  This was an example of God working with imperfect people to accomplish God’s Will, which should be an encouragement to us. This is also an example of how family and national traditions can get in the way of hearing and doing God’s Will. In Isaac’s world the traditions included birthrights and end-of-life blessings for the first born male. It became necessary for Isaac’s wife, Rachael, to scheme against Isaac (to accomplish God’s Will) because it’s a foregone conclusion that Isaac would not have given up the tradition of giving to first-born Esau what the tradition said was due him even though Esau did not have the gift or abilities for leadership of the nation. Traditions vs. God’s Will—Which of our traditions might get in the way of God’s Will? Might this apply to our tradition of healthcare? What is God’s Will for healthcare? I think I know what God’s Will is, through the example of Jesus; I just am not sure (yet) of the process to reach that point.

-2-  THE DEADLINE is upon us for any news or announcements that should be in the September edition of our Newsletter. The Newsletter will be put together and mailed one week from this Thursday (Aug. 27).

-3-  NOAH’S ARK PRE-SCHOOL is set to have an open house and begin class in September. A last minute concern arose about the scheduled carpeting for the Nursery Room which has come in at a higher price than anticipated. We are in need of contributions to cover this unexpected event. Can you help us out with this before September (which is two weeks away)? See Christian Bryant for details or send your check, made out to “PFUMC” and marked “carpeting” to the office or Sunday offering plate.

-4-  NEW DIRECTORY SOON – Any change in phone, cell phone, name, address, or desired membership status, should be submitted to the office (perryumc@frontiernet.net) or directly to Judy Webster (gwebster@frontiernet.net) who maintains our database. We would like this fall’s PFUMC DIRECTORY to be as accurate and complete as possible. Thank You.

-5-  DON HUGHES, after several changed plans, will be returning home this Friday, August 21. He is doing very well overall with the assistance of a walker. The good news is that Don anticipates (as does Sally) that he will be at the helm of the Choir when it begins again on Sept. 13 at 11 am which is the Sunday following Labor Day. Mark your calendar and come out to welcome both Don and his Choir back into service!

 -----end-----

A New Development - Help Needed (GP1)

As many of you are aware, Christian Bryant, a candidate for Eagle Scout, has chosen as his Eagle project, the remodeling and refurbishing of our Nursery Room. This room will be used as the principal classroom for our new Noah’s Ark Pre-School beginning in September. Everything has been moving along very well and we thank everyone who has come out to serve as workers and cleaners under Christian’s leadership.

We have just been informed that the carpeting, an essential for a Pre-School and Nursery, is coming in at a considerably higher price than anticipated. We need your help. If you have been unable to help on Saturdays, this is your opportunity to help this project stay on schedule for the September opening. Please consider an immediate and generous donation for the carpeting. Your contribution may either be mailed to the church (Attn: Noah’s Ark carpeting), or may be placed in an envelope marked “Noah’s Ark carpeting” and deposited in an offering plate. Cash will be accepted if you deliver it in person to the church office (call before coming).

 Thank you so very much!

FROM OUR BISHOP about the Floods

The Rev. Dr. Marcus Matthews, Resident Bishop of the New York West Area, has called for a special time of prayer Sunday for all those impacted by the storms in the Southern Tier.

A United Methodist response was immediate and Disaster Response Team Coordinator, the Rev. Carl Chamberlain, is working with local and national agencies and individuals to coordinate assistance as needed.

"We are blessed with Carl and all the others volunteering," Bishop Matthews said.

Rev. Chamberlain met leaders at the Silver Creek Emergency Operations Center, Chautauqua Co. this week.  Tom and Linda Cooper attended the Wednesday morning Human Needs meeting and deployed with ERT members for cleanup. More will be needed in the near-term and NEJ UMVIM Coordinator Greg Forrester was invited to begin making calls and have them ready.

800 flood buckets and 400 health kits were delivered to Springville First UMC. Volunteers are on site to off load them. 400 buckets and 400 health kits were delivered to Silver Creek at the First Presbyterian Church from the same load. Volunteers can use them in the cleanup as well as the area residents. Love INC will help with distribution of the buckets in the Gowanda area.

Forestville UMC has been designated as an emergency food pantry, enabling extra deliveries of supplies from the WNY Food Bank for distribution regionally. Rev. Becky Ward has facilitated this and is the primary contact for the Gowanda/Collins/Forestville area.  Perrysburg/Dayton UMC is high and dry and has invited one of the Gowanda congregations for their worship as they dry out. No word as whether the invitation has been accepted.

At the request of Bishop Matthews, Rev. Chamberlain will be contacting UMCOR to request a seed grant for the cleanup effort.

Congregations are requested to pray for those impacted by the storms as well as those responding to help.  The collection of funds for human needs as well as flood buckets is appreciated.

Volunteers will be needed, but the structure to assign them is still being developed.   Long-term volunteers will eventually be needed to help with rebuilding.  More information about how to volunteer is anticipated soon.  Watch emails and www.wnyumc.org

E-BULLETIN (PFUMC 08-09-09 GP1)

-1-  61 PERSONS were present in worship to witness the joyous occasion of the baptism of Bob and Jane Pascoe’s grandchildren, Alan Joseph Pierce, and Raylin Frances Pierce who are the children of Craig and Julie (Pascoe) Pierce and the Godchildren of Richard and Dawn Pascoe. Bob was privileged and happy to have officiated at the baptismal font this morning. God’s blessings and my personal best to each member of the family.

-2-  RETIREMENT – Just before the pronouncement of the Benediction this morning, I announced my pending retirement due to health concerns which have been limiting my mobility. This was not my plan for at least 3 more years (or even 8), but it became obvious very quickly within the past 2 weeks. It appears at the present time that the effective date will be Nov. 1, 2009. I will be remaining at my Fruit Street home at least for the time being and watching for the open doors of God’s Will to direct me toward the next step in my commitment to him, presumably at a desk, but only God knows at this point. The D.S. and the Bishop are evaluating our church’s current needs and will be contacting our SPR Committee shortly.

-3-  THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY of North Gainesville is this evening beginning with a picnic at 6 pm. All are welcome for a donation. Following the meal, there will be a brief program in the sanctuary followed by a hymn sing. I will be there to rejoice with them.

-4-  WHAT A JOY it was to welcome George Vineyard back into our midst this morning. He continues to be on the mend, and asks that prayers be continued because of their profound effectiveness. Will do!

The cow buckets are once again available at the top of the isles for your contribution.

Don Hughes & Chuck Croll Progressing

DON HUGHES is making good progress in his rehabilitation at East Side. Yesterday (Sunday) from a series of shots, he experienced a small tear in weakened skin which required a stitch at the WCCH ER, but he was immediately returned to East Side and in good spirits. He continues to work hard and is now able to control the fingers on his effected left hand—at least to an extent. His speech is exceptional. The left leg has not made the excellent progress of everything else, but slowly continues to progress in healing. Many thanks for the cards, prayers, and visits for which he is grateful.

CHUCK CROLL begins his second week of recovery at home from surgery, and although weak, continues to make substantial and good progress in healing. He extends his thanks for all the prayers and messages of concern.

-3-  HEIFER PROJECT GOAL: $500 – Our annual collection for the Heifer Project International was officially kicked off this morning as the offering buckets officially returned back into being Cow Buckets. Although one needy family is supplied with a heifer, they are expected to give the ensuing calves to neighbors, thereby enriching more of the community. This is also done with chickens, goats, ducks, bees, and etc.  Our traditional goal has been the cost of a heifer ($500) and we are hoping to once again have enough to give a heifer.

-1-  EASTSIDE-BOUND – Don Hughes is anticipating being moved to Eastside Nursing Home for two weeks of therapy before returning home. The move will be either today or tomorrow.

-2-  CHICKEN BARBECUE – Coming this Saturday, July 11, 2009, from 11 am to 1:30 pm or until sold out. Again this year, we are running our barbecue in conjunction with the Perry Sidewalk Art Festival. This always helps us during the absence of people in July and August. See you Saturday!

-3-  THIS SUNDAY, July 12, 2009, at 10 am, our worship service will include Part 2 of Adam and Eve, portrayed by Kellie and Scott Milhollen. They did a super job of Part 1 last Sunday. Come also to worship the Lord in song with two praise hymns – Glorify Thy Name and Open Our Eyes, Lord. The hymn before the Scripture is – I Know Whom I Have Believed and the closing hymn will be – In the Garden. Pastor Greg will reflect on “Snakes in My Garden.” See you then!

-4-  EXPENDITURES REPORT – As of July 1, 2009, our budget-to-date is $60,128 and our actual expenses were $53,724. Our current outstanding debts are:  Our Conference at $4275 and Organ Repair at $438. Thanks for your generous, heartfelt, and joyful giving!

-5-  AFGHANISTAN-BOUND – Andrew Calkins Cook, ("Big Andy") is scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan sometime this month.  Andy is an Infantryman in the U.S. Army and serves on a Stryker. When he arrives “in country,” he is to be in Kandahar Province. Andrew is the son of former Administrative Assistant Margie Calkins Cook. Let’s keep him in our regular thoughts and prayers.

-6-  MARRIED – Jacqueline M. Secrist (Jackie) and Christopher M. Jurek (Chris) were married in our Worship Center on Saturday, July 4, 2009 at 1:00 pm. The service was beautiful and was followed by the reception at Firemen’s Hall. Chris serves our community as a local fireman. The couple and their guests walked into the reception hall to discover the wedding cake tipped over on its side with one layer completely smashed. The caterers were one-half hour late and the Bride lost her diamond in the parking lot, but who’s counting misfortunes? Thankfully, everyone including the couple stayed in a celebrative mode.

-7-  COMING BAPTISM – Madison Marie Thompson, born September 9, 2008, in Warsaw, will be receiving the Sacrament of Baptism on Sunday, July 26, 2009, during the 10 am worship. She is the daughter of Tricia Wells and Mike Thompson.

E-BULLETIN (PFUMC 07-05-09 GP1)

-1-  HOSPITALIZED – Don Hughes was admitted to Millard Fillmore (Gates Circle) in Buffalo yesterday (Saturday) with a possible stroke. The first tests indicated that stroke was not a certainty at this point. We each pray that his rapid treatment and quick admittance will prove to be the key to his full and rapid recovery.

-2-  BETTY KLINE had a hip replacement this past week, and is up walking as part of her physical therapy. We pray for her full and quick recovery.

-3-  JEANNE YENCER requests prayer for her family as they travel this week. Please pray that they remain under God’s care and receive God’s traveling mercies.

-4-  OUR WORSHIP SERVICE was powerfully enhanced by Kellie and Scott Clark portraying Adam and Eve in the Garden with Fred Willis serving as “God.” Part 2 of Adam and Eve will be next Sunday, July 12, 2009, at 10:00 am. Our thanks go to Bob Pascoe for authoring these scripts. See the newsletter for the complete Summer Schedule.

-5-  THIS COMING SATURDAY (July 11, 2009) is our summer Chicken Barbecue which runs in conjunction with the Village of Perry’s Chalk Art Festival. Please be ready to respond “YES” to Sue Sprague’s phone call this week for help in making this a success.

-6-  HEALTHFUL COMMUNION – Since your pastor (and others) continue to be concerned about the purity of our Holy Communion experience, I am proposing a “direct hands-free” policy. I am proposing that Consecrators and Bread-Servers utilize medical gloves which will be provided, in order that the bread, both before and after consecration, remains free from direct human touch, effective immediately. We seek to insure that this spiritual experience not be hindered by worry or concern about the potential transfer of germs. The August 2nd Holy Communion will be reviewed by the Worship Team at their August meeting later in the month.

-7-  GOD’S RICHEST BLESSINGS be with you as you go about enjoying God’s marvelous creation at this most beautiful time of the year. Remember to regularly thank and worship God this summer.

E-BULLETIN (PFUMC 06-28-09 GP1)

-1-  NINETEEN (19) PERSONS were a part of this morning’s Don Hughes Choir** and did a super-spectacular job! The entire morning was filled with upbeat, meaningful music and the whole service was planned around our honored graduates and the subject of New Beginnings. We took time to recognize our graduates, presenting gifts to our High School grads and cards to our college and doctoral level grads (i.e. Terry Shumway). All members present at worship signed a card for Mead Hurley, unable to be with us, who just graduated from Roberts Wesleyan College. Our thanks are extended to Mary Jane Bryant and Doug Wilson for coordinating efforts on behalf of our graduates.

** unofficial name used by Pastor Greg.

-2-  THE JULY-AUGUST NEWSLETTER (combined edition) will be published and mailed this Thursday, July 2, 2009. Watch for it! This is Kelly Milhollen’s last edition as editor, and once again our sincerest appreciation for all the work you have put into this.

-3-  UPCOMING NEWSLETTERS – Although the deadline for the Sept. edition is August 23, we ask you to remember that we are beginning a new procedure known as Prepare As We Go. This means that information and news copy should be forwarded to the church office as quickly as possible following each meeting of our church council, committees, teams, task forces, UMW, and UMY. This way, it is “out of your hair” quickly and into the process of the upcoming edition without having to burn the proverbial midnight oil.

-4-  SUMMER SCHEDULE – Beginning this Wednesday, July 2, 2009, we are officially on our Summer Schedule which means two things:  (1) the time of the worship service moves to 10:00 am and (2) the Summer Preaching Series starts next Sunday, July 5 (which just happens to be my 62nd birthday). See the Newsletter for details on the summer worship schedule.

-5-  HEALTH UPDATE – Russ Watson had his pace-maker surgery this past week and is doing well at home recovering.

E-BULLETIN (PFUMC 06-14-09 GP1)

-1-  77 PERSONS were in worship this morning to sing great music and to hear how the topic of “Planting, Waiting, and Harvesting” applies to those of us who must spend our time in our homes and offices in order to be productive. One illustration told of how we are somewhat like seeds—lifeless, lazy, and basically dead until we are planted and come to life, especially with the power and help of God. Inviting the Holy Spirit into our lives is like planting a seed—it opens up new opportunities and potentials, the beauty of new dreams and deeds.  The Holy Spirit brings new life to one in need of coming to life, and accomplishing our God-given purpose in new and exciting ways.

-2-  TONIGHT (SUNDAY) AT 7 PM IS THE RECITAL of the musician-students of Michele Rechberger here in our Worship Center. All are welcome!

-3-  TOMORROW EVENING (MONDAY) AT 7 PM, a meeting of the SPR committee will meet to update ourselves in general, and on the subject of church leadership and our current funding needs. Members of SPR include – Fred Reed (chair), Roy Griswold, Diane Thompson, Judy Milhollen, Rick Pascoe, Michele Rechberger, George Vineyard, Dell Bell, and Scott Milhollen. (Roy and Dell have been excused.)

-6-  NEXT SUNDAY (FATHER’S DAY) begins 3 weeks of cow-bucket collecting for VBS – Vacation Bible School will again be held in August with Perry First and Brick Church as co-sponsors and our Drama Group and teachers helping in bringing the message to the children.

-7-  ONE WEEK FROM TOMORROW (Monday, June 22, from 6 to 8 pm) is the new date and time of Registration for our Noah’s Ark Pre-School for 3-year-olds.

 Breakfast Reminder (benefit of Pre-School)

THIS SUNDAY BREAKFAST WILL BE SERVED from 8 am to 10:45 am in Fellowship Hall. I am told it will be spectacular—as spectacular as a Breakfast can be!  (Adults $5;  Child $2.50;  Under 12 Free.)  Please come out and support our new Noah’s Ark Pre-School starting in September for 3-year-olds of our church and community.

E-BULLETIN (PFUMC 06-11-09 GP1)

-1-  THIS SUNDAY during worship we will be singing the refrain to Great Is Thy Faithfulness, Blessed Be the Name, and My Tribute for the opening of worship. The choir has the day off. Later we will be singing Hymn of Promise, Trust and Obey, and two verses of Here I Am, Lord for our closing hymn. Pastor Greg will speak on “Planting, Waiting, and Harvesting” based on Mark 4:26-34 and 2 Corinthians 5:6-10, 14-17.

-2-  REGISTRATION for Noah’s Ark Pre-School has been changed to Monday, June 22, 2009, from 6 to 8 pm.

-3-  ANNUAL CONFERENCE TIME – Pastor Greg and George Vineyard will be up in Buffalo next weekend (June 19, 20, 21, 2009) for the WNY Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. This will be the last full conference meeting prior to the merger of four UMC conferences across NYS, scheduled to take place between June and September of 2010 (next year). The average person in the pew will probably not notice as much change as the pastors and lay members will unless if you have been asked to serve on a District or Conference Committee. Because the new conference will take up most of NYS (except the NY metropolitan area), many meetings will begin taking place by way of teleconferencing.

-4- BACCALAUREATE for Perry is scheduled for Tuesday at 8 pm in the High School auditorium.

-5- JUNE 28TH will be the last 11:00 am worship service for the season. Worship here at PFUMC will revert to 10:00 am on July 5 and continue through Labor Day Sunday. Epworth Hall worship is at 10:30 am.

-5-  BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’SWell, not quite, but there WILL be breakfast at PFUMC this Sunday from 8 to 10 am. Please come out not only for the fellowship but to help get our new Noah’s Ark Pre-School program off the ground and open in September. The plan is to be self-supporting but we are in need of funds for start-up. Your attendance at breakfast will help this greatly!! Thank you!

-6-  “TAGGED” SHOULD BE AVOIDED This is one email inbox catastrophe!  As I mentioned in a previous email, this spamming and hacking email has not been sent from me and apparently has not been sent by others either. Once the email is opened, it connects you to the internet and hacks your files for personal information. So far it appears as though it is only interested in light weight material such as photographs, name, age, etc. and has not bothered getting account numbers or etc. But keep a watch out anyway (if you did open it) to be sure nothing shows up on your credit or debit cards. If so, report it to the bank immediately. I never send anything that is either an .exe file or other programmatic file without first consulting the recipient.

E-BULLETIN (PFUMC 05-31-09 GP1)

-1-  WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT that children could bring so much joy and understanding to us during a worship service? That was the story of this morning’s experience. Call it “Children’s Day” or call it a “Great Celebration of Pentecost,” but whatever you call it, know that many people put time and effort into an experience of worship which became for all, a very meaningful experience.

-----My particular thanks to Jane Pascoe whose ideas and plans made for a dynamic design for worship. Each of our Sunday School leaders, teachers, and parents, need also be credited for their time, cooperation, and personal assistance in helping to keep the children moving and in good order.

----- Thanks also to Bob Pascoe for the creation of the children’s placards each of which had one of the nine fruits of the Spirit printed in large, colored letters and were processed into the Sanctuary and held up for observation during the brief sermon.

----- Thanks also to Jane Miller for creating our “Spirit Poles” which led off the procession and still stand in the front of the Sanctuary with a white dove on top and streamers of red, orange and yellow portraying the “tongues of fire” which appeared at Pentecost.

----- Thanks to our ushers for processing in our Spirit Poles and for helping in the coordination of the children.

----- Thanks also to each who popped a balloon and read a Scripture from within the congregation!

-2-  MARTHA BUTTON is resting comfortably at Buffalo General Hospital in 1301 (telephone number 716-859-6825) following some kind of episode with her heart yesterday (Saturday). Merv Button drove her to WCCH from which she was transferred to Buffalo. She is awaiting an angiogram. Her biggest regret was not being able to be with the children in worship this morning. Brenda Paddock and Eric Kelly filled in on the instruments in her absence. Thanks Brenda and Eric!

-3-  THIS THURSDAY the Pastor’s Bible Study will resume at the home of the Griswold’s. We will be talking about the first chapters in each of the following books:  A Hop, Skip, and Jump Through the Bible, Beatitudes from the Back Side, and More Parables from the Back Side,  each of whose author is J. Ellsworth Kalas who is president of Asbury Theological Seminary after thirty-eight years as a United Methodist pastor and five years in evangelism with the World Methodist Council. All are welcome!

-4-  NEXT SUNDAY we will celebrate Holy Communion in the pews during the worship service.

Martha Button Hospitalized (PFUMC 05-30-09 GP1)

Mid-morning today (Saturday, May30), Martha Button called me on her cell phone to tell me that she was driving herself to WCCH where she had an appointment for an angiogram next week, but could not wait any longer since she was experiencing considerable discomfort. After initial examinations at WCCH, she was taken to Buffalo General Hospital in Buffalo. We have no further word at this point. Martha also managed to engage Brenda Paddock for tomorrow's Pentecost worship. Martha was so looking forward to the children in worship. Anyone with a video camera? (or at least a digital camera?)

The people of Holy Apostles Church here in Perry are so very grateful for the invitation to use our facilities because Holy Apostles’ building was not large enough. Over 20 Episcopal priests were present and participating in the celebration. They too raved about the beauty of our church and the warm hearted and open welcome which they received. I was privileged to have been asked to participate in the celebration of the Eucharist. Afterwards, vanilla, chocolate, and carrot cake; punch, coffee, and tea were offered at the reception held in our Fellowship Hall. From the Pastor (GP1)

As I write, it is one-half hour before Noon on Good Friday—just 30 minutes away from Jesus’ purported time of being raised up to hang on the cross. Thus began three hours of suffering for the sin of humankind—for your sin and for mine. His suffering and death is sad, but it also is a loved-stoked gift from God who lets the power of salvation flow through the human body of Jesus. In Perry, we honor this from 1:00 until 2:15—this year at Brick Presbyterian and 7:30 at Perry First UMC.

On the third day, we arise to yet a new hope which follows salvation—the hope of life abundant and life eternal. It is Resurrection Sunday when Jesus is freed from his tomb and lives again!  We celebrate this at 11:00 Sunday morning with flowers, brass choir, and balloons during our joyous worship.

My prayer for you is a most meaningful Good Friday and an exceptionally powerful Easter Sunday! May you truly know what the Scripture calls “The Joy of Salvation,” and may you also discover a new and fresh infusion of spiritual power by way of God’s Holy Spirit!

 God’s Richest Blessings this Easter,

PASTOR GREG

E-BULLETIN (PFUMC 04-08-09 GP1)

-1-  ON SUNDAY at a brief meeting of the Administrative Council following worship, a motion was seconded and approved by all to support the Outreach Committee and its sub-committee to form a Pre-School program beginning in September. The plan is that it will be a self-supporting, faith-based program, starting off small and maintaining a waiting list until such time as expansion is possible. Our current building insurance will cover this project and we have room for the program.

-2-  THE SUNDAY EVENING Praise & Worship Service will be changing its time and format.  P&W will no longer be meeting for a separate Sunday evening service.  Rather, it is hoped that one or two Sundays a month we can incorporate the best of P&W into the 11:00 am worship service and still maintain the richness of traditional and blended worship. Nothing we try will ever be “set in stone,” but is open for discussion with regard to effectiveness, desirability, and to meeting the standard of “worshiping in spirit and in truth.” Since the majority of worshipers have been enjoying our new upbeat opening songs, we are convinced you will enjoy slightly expanding upon it.

-3-  PASTOR GREG AND PFUMC will be participating tomorrow evening (7:30) in the Maundy Thursday worship service at Perry Center Congregational Church, along with Brick Presbyterian and the Perry Center congregation.

-4-  FRIDAY AT 1:00 PM AT BRICK PRESBYTERIAN, Pastor Greg will be doing a reflection on “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do,” which is Christ’s First Word from the cross. Pam Wallum will be delivering a reflection on “Woman, behold thy Son; Son, behold thy mother!” which is the Third Word. George Vineyard will be delivering a reflection on “I Thirst,” the Fifth Word.  Other 10-minute reflectors include Garrett Anderson, Kirk Katner, Gary Wood, and John Vogel. Bette Jean Wolcott will be at the organ.

-5-  FRIDAY AT 7:30 PM HERE AT PFUMC, there will be a beautiful candlelight Tenebrae Service.  Scripture readers include Eleanor Kreutter, Judy Milhollen, Joan Krause, and Fred Willis. Pastor Greg and Rev. Bob will do the scriptural reflections. Each reader will extinguish one candle until all eight are out at which point the service is complete and we leave the sanctuary in silence.

UMC Scholarships & Loans (GP1)

Scholarships and loans are avialable from

United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS)—Students who need financial help for college costs can now apply online for United Methodist scholarships or loans. "We believe this new system is much more convenient for applicants," said Angella Current-Felder, executive director of the Office of Loans and Scholarships at the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry. The online scholarship application went live on Jan. 5. As of March 17, more than 1,600 applications had been submitted for scholarships for the fall term. Allyson Collinsworth, scholarships administrator, said applications are coming in much faster online than the paper applications did. For the 2008/2009 academic year, the agency awarded $4.57 million in scholarships to 3,371 students, and $1.95 million in loans to 430 students. "Scholarship deadlines vary for the more than 60 programs administered by GBHEM, but the final deadline has always been May 15. We ar e encouraging applicants (especially renewal students) to apply and complete the application early this year to ensure they are considered for funding," Collinsworth said. Applicants must submit an official transcript, letters of reference, and essay to the office in one packet to complete the file after the online portion is submitted. To learn more about United Methodist loans and scholarships, visit www.gbhem.org (http://www.gbhem.org) and click on the Loans and Scholarships button.

Fwd: Thank You

Thank you for the prayers for my family. They are doing well, settled into a rental home and planning to rebuild. They were overwhelmed by the generous donations and support of the community. Life is beginning to become normal again. If anything good came out of this tragedy, it was the realization that possessions are meaningless. It is faith, family, friends and community that bring fulfillment. Eileen and Jim Witherel

Paul Carmody (4-5-09)

THE FATHER OF LINDA (TISCH) CARMODY pasted into eternal life at Noon today. Paul Carmody had been ill for some time. A memorial service is being planned for May.

E-BULLETIN for Palm Sunday 2009 (GP1)

-1-  95 PERSONS WERE PRESENT for our Palm Sunday Worship Service. The opening with Eric Kelly was “Majesty,” and the choir gave a great calypso rhythm, toe-tapping, body-swaying rendition of a strong praise hymn. During Children’s Time, there was a children’s parade around the Sanctuary with the waving of palms and the shouted greetings, “Hosanna, Hosanna, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” We closed our official worship with the celebration of Holy Communion in the pews.

-2-  OUR ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL met immediately following worship on April 5, 2009. The following members were present:  L. Patrick, R. Chasey, E. Kreutter, N. Meissel, G. Vineyard, B. Church, B. Emerling, G. Franklin, J. Milhollen, N. Wilson and B. Pascoe.  The one item agenda was: Voting on the preschool program formed by the Outreach Committee. An Outreach sub-committee has been established to develop plans for the beginning of a preschool program to be sponsored by the Perry United Methodist Church.  This idea grew out of a wish to help the church be responsive to a need in the community arising from the close of the “Tiny Tot” program.  The committee members are: Nancy Wilson, Outreach Chair; Kellie Milhollen, Liz Emerling, Jen Keller, Bonnie Church, Betty Emerling. The initial age group for the program will be three (3) year olds. It is our intent to begin in September.

 -3-  HEALTH UPDATES

June Bauer has moved to a Nursing Home in East Aurora.

Jean Griswold had surgery this past Wednesday at Millard Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo, but returned home yesterday (Saturday) to recover.

Carol Rider has moved to a Nursing Home in Dansville.

Betsy Shirley is still in WCCH under strong pain relievers.

-4-  THIS IS HOLY WEEK and begins the profound spiritual journey of Jesus through his arrest, flogging, mock trial, sentencing, and execution. Ultimately, Jesus rises from the dead as the “first fruits” of the promise of our own eternal life. Plan to be present with us both Friday evening at 7:30 and Sunday morning at 11:00 am.

E-BULLETIN (PFUMC 04-04-09 GP1)

-1-  WORK DAY POSTPONED – The Spring Work Day for PFUMC, hosted by the Trustees, has been postponed because of the weather. It is now scheduled for Saturday, April 11.

-2-  PRAISE & WORSHIP – The next P&W Service will be May 3. (There will be no P&W this Sunday, April 5.)

-3-  FROM TAMI QUILTY  & STEVE CHAMBERLAIN – We wanted to let everyone know that the PCS Class of 1985 and the Perry Community collectively raised $2,700 for Keith and Hilary Standera!  We are truly amazed by the generosity in peoples' hearts and grateful to be part of a community that pulls together in a time of need.  Please thank everyone who contributed without hesitation and for making a difference.  A card, including the names of everyone who donated, will be presented over the weekend. Thank you and God Bless.

-4-  ON GOOD FRIDAY at the 1:00 pm Community Worship Service at Brick Presbyterian, Pastor Greg will be speaking on the First Word of Jesus’ last seven, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.”  Dr. George Vineyard will be speaking on the Fifth Word, “I Thirst.” Watch for the cross walk coming up Main Street beginning at 12:30 pm from Holy Apostles and ending at Brick Presbyterian.

 -----end-----

P& W Cancelled 4-5-09

THE PRAISE & WORSHIP SERVICE originally scheduled for this Sunday evening (April 5) has been cancelled. The next P&W will be Sunday, May 3, at 7 pm.

E-BULLETIN (PFUMC 04-03-09 GP1)

-1-  HOLIEST OF DAYS BEGINS THIS WEEKEND Palm Sunday is this Sunday at 11 am with Holy Communion, then the Good Friday evening memorial of Jesus Christ at 7:30 pm. The following Sunday is the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection on Easter Sunday at 11 am. These three services have been designed with you in mind. The goals of these three services are to honor and worship God, to receive spiritual enlightenment and strength, and to recommit ourselves as disciples of Jesus Christ. Where else would a Christian be on these holiest of days?

-2-  APRIL 2009 NEWSLETTERThe emailed copies of the Newsletter were sent out yesterday (Thursday) at appx. 12:15 pm. The paper copies of the Newsletter were given to the Post Office yesterday at appx. 1:30 pm. The only glitch of which I am aware is that some folks, who normally do not get an email copy, received an emailed page 8 and an emailed April calendar. You may either ignore them or enjoy them—the emailed copies are of no cost to the church.

-3-  GIVING TO GOD AND GOD’S KINGDOM is not only spiritual discipline, but also a spiritual experience when done joyfully. (“The Lord loves a cheerful giver.” Begrudged giving is counter-productive to spirituality.) Nevertheless, we also wish to thank you for your faithfulness in giving this past quarter—you have managed to maintain last year’s income level. We are aiming for maintaining the budget standards that we have all grown to know and love, and aiming at avoiding detrimental budget cuts. Thank you again.

-4-  GOOD NEWS & BAD NEWSThe Good News: Our budget and our regular giving for 2009 is basically the same as 2008. In late 2007 we received a special gift of $5,000 which took us into the high-cost month of January 2008 with a carry-over for the big bills. The Bad News: In 2008 there was no $5,000 gift for 2009. We began to run a deficit right from the beginning of 2009 and which continues. The Good News: We have all the money we need. The Bad News: It is still in your pocket.

 -----end-----

E-BULLETIN (PFUMC 04-02-09 GP1)

-1-  TWO PAGES OF THE NEWSLETTER – It has been called to my attention that apparently Page 8 and the Calendar were emailed to the entire E-Bulletin mailing list. I have tried, but have been unable to discover why this happened. Those of you who receive paper copies of the Newsletter will receive all the pages again this month since the April 2009 edition was placed in the mail today (Thursday, April 2).

-2-  THIS SUNDAY IS PALM SUNDAY – We will be highlighting the children and palm “branches” at times during the Worship. We will be singing, “Majesty, Worship His Majesty” (led by Eric Kelly), “Tell Me the Stories of Jesus,” and “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna.” The sermon title is “Are You Waving Your Palm Branch?”  Holy Communion will also be celebrated and you will be served in the pews.

-3-  NEXT WEEK IS HOLY WEEK – We particularly want to emphasis the Good Friday Service being held right here at PFUMC starting at 7:30 pm (not 7:00). It will be a Candlelight Tenebrae Service and many different voices will be used in the Scripture Readings and Reflections. We’re planning on you being present since this is the second most Holy Day on the calendar and memorializes the sacrifice and crucifixion of Jesus Christ on our behalf.

4-  ORDER & RATIONALE OF HOLY DAYS Resurrection Sunday (Easter) is number 1 because it validates all that Jesus taught, promised, and sacrificed for the forgiveness of sins and the first fruits of eternal life.  Good Friday is number 2 not only because of the profound drama and execution, but because it was necessary both for the forgiveness of sin and the ultimate Christian experience—resurrection and eternal life.  Christmas is number 3 because it appears that it was not absolutely necessary in order to accomplish the purposes of Jesus Christ on earth. You recall that Jesus “ascended into heaven” in full form before the eyes of the disciples and the angels proclaimed that he would come again “in the same manner” referring to the descending of Jesus from his heavenly home down to the earth. Therefore, Jesus could have originally descended from his heavenly home without taking on the form of an infant—had that been the plan. Nevertheless, we are extremely grateful for the reality of the birth narrative.

12 Days from Now  (Sunday, March 29, 2009)

WILL YOU FIND just one hour during Holy Thursday and Good Friday for Jesus' Memorial?

WILL YOU BE among those who give thanks to God for sacrificing his only son on your behalf?

WILL YOU HONOR God for allowing Jesus to be arrested--though clearly innocent, severely whipped, unjustly tried, and cruelly crucified on your behalf?

WILL YOU WORSHIP God in thanksgiving for providing a way of salvation and eternal life?

THE ANSWER ISYour church (PFUMC) is providing that type of special service on God's very special Good Friday (April 10) at 7:30 pm in our candle-lit sanctuary!

May God bless you for showing him your gratefulness and respect for his inconceivably great gift to us!

E-BULLETIN (PFUMC 03-29-09 GP1)

-1-  73 PERSONS were present in worship to witness a deeply moving drama skit on “Return to the Cross” with “special guest,” Casius, the Roman Centurion who pierced Jesus’ side on the day of Jesus’ crucifixion. Equally moving were the words of reflection delivered by Rev. Bob. We extend our sincerest appreciation for the fine acting and presentation by the Drama Group which also featured Roy Griswold as Casius.

-2-  ANOTHER FIRE – The home of Keith and Hilary Standera burned down on Saturday (March 28, 2009). They have lost everything. (Hilary works in the Perry Post Office.) NEWS FLASH (GP1)

A small bird just flew through my office, stopping only long enough to tell me some inspiring news: “Members of the Drama Group believe that their special presentation this Sunday morning will be the best of all they have done so far as a group.” The bird continued, “You know what this means?”  I responded, “Yes. People need to know about it so they don’t miss it.”  So now, you have the message and if you want inspiration evolving around the passion of Jesus Christ, THIS IS IT.

Secondly, Good Friday will be a “candlelight” service in the form of a Tenebrae. This, too, should inspire and move you. Come for the 7:30 pm service.

E-BULLETIN (PFUMC 03-22-09 GP1)

-1-  65 PERSONS came to thank God and worship God with Don Hughes and the Choir at the piano and Pastor Greg at the organ. As usual our opening hymn was an update song of faith, but this morning it also had that marvelous jazz rhythm and sound. Our thanks to Bob Pascoe for leading the service and preaching.

-2-  CASH CRUNCH—Easter is just three weeks away (Palm Sunday just two weeks). I personally believe that we would make up the largest part of our current deficit if everyone would express their love and appreciation for God through these two holy days and the generous offerings to be received. The next church dinner would also easily make up the remaining part of the deficit (especially if we work at getting diners). I am earnestly praying of God that the word would, which I used three times above, can be changed into the blessing of the word “will.” Therefore, will you join me in the commitment and determination to bring this about?

-3-  HOLY APOSTLES EPISCOPAL CHURCH announces that, by the Grace of God and the approval and consent of Bishop J Michael Garrison, Episcopal Bishop of Western New York, Kirk Katner has been approved for ordination to the Transitional Deaconate. The ordination will occur on Saturday, April 25 at 4:00 pm at the Perry First United Methodist Church to which all Perry pastors and congregations are invited. We will be sending out formal invitations as soon as the details are worked out.

It is expected that between 150 to 200 people could be attending this service, a number that Holy Apostles Church cannot possibly hold. This is the reason we have accepted the generous offer of our sisters and brothers in the faith at the United Methodist Church to utilize their Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall for this community service and reception.” Kirk asks that you keep Holy Apostles and him in your prayers as they plan for this ordination and new ministry.

    JELLY BEAN PRAYER:

Red is for the blood He gave,
Green is for the grass He made,
Yellow is for the sun so bright,
Orange is for the edge of night.
Black is for the sins we made,
White is for the grace He gave,
Purple is for the hour of sorrow,
Pink is for the new tomorrow.

A bag of jelly beans'
colorful and sweet,
Is a prayer...is a promise...
Is an Easter treat

E-BULLETIN (PFUMC 03-13-09 GP1)

-1-  CASH CRUNCH Our current level of giving from most in our church family is basically good and we are so grateful for those who so faithfully support their church home and its mission from God. We need a special effort to keep up the current levels, and catch up on giving which has gotten behind. Special appreciation to those who would like to provide additional / special monetary gifts, or even pledge increases if you have the means and are being led to do so.

[ The cash short-fall apparently came about from a drop in giving before the end of 2008 which left us with no carry-over balance for January 2009 and the “bill-and-utility-heavy” month of January. Our income and expenses from 2008 as compared to 2009 YTD are virtually the same so farEvents are now being planned to raise funds—many of which lend themselves perfectly for inviting family, friends and neighbors. It appears that if we can make up this short fall and also continue faithful and regular giving, this cash crunch could  be short-lived—at least for this year.]

-2-  USE OF OUR COPY MACHINES for personal and non-church business:

  • 100% black and white copy on 8 ½ x 11 run on the OLD machine is 10 cents per copy
  • 100% black and white copy on 8 ½ x 11 run on the NEW machine is 25 cents per copy
  • Up to 50% color copy on 8 ½ x 11 run on the NEW machine is 49 cents per copy
  • 51% to 100% color copy on 8 ½ x 11  on the NEW machine is $1.00 per copy

Donations to the copy machines may be placed in an envelope, labeled New / Old Copy Machine and placed in the offering plate. (Online use of color is free.)

-3-  THIS SUNDAY IN WORSHIP you will be delighted with the special music-oriented service celebrating Women’s History Month. The women composers of some of our beloved hymns and their music will be highlighted. Several women from our church will be taking part in the service and addressing three very special women composer-hymn writers. I am really looking forward to this one!

-4-  NEW IDENTITY – Some have told me they associate me and my location with my black Jeep Liberty. Well, the lease was up this past weekend and it was to my advantage to turn it in. Chrysler is no longer leasing or I would have gotten another one. Thanks to a parishioner, I will soon be the owner of a silver 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan. My Saturn, before the Jeep, was also silver and the Jeep was the only vehicle I ever owned which was black. Don’t think me strange if I fiddle with the gear shift lever when at an intersection. I am also adjusting from my manual transmission back to an automatic!

CONTENTS OF THIS E-BULLETIN:

1. Letter from Bishop Matthews

2. District Youth Meeting

3. Camp Asbury Opportunity

4. Transformed Lives

 ---------------------------------------------------

 -1-  LETTER FROM BISHOP MATTHEWS:

January 14, 2009

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

The United Methodist Publishing House has produced a whole church study and emphasis on "Three Simple Rules for Christian Living." Focusing on John Wesley's General Rules, the study has been designed for adults, youth, children, and at- home use and reflection. It is ideal to implement during the upcoming Lenten season. We encourage you to consider it and our suggestion is that it be a way our whole New York West Area can join together in study, thereby drawing us together and moving us toward embracing core Wesleyan principles in the process.

It would also be possible for pastors to design a series of worship services and sermons to coincide with the all-church study going on in small groups, classes, and at-home devotional times.

Materials include Bishop Rueben Job's little book Three Simple Rules: A Wesleyan Way of Living, Three  Simple Rules for Christian Living  study book for adults, Three Simple Rules 24/7  study book for youth, Three Simple Rules for Following Jesus leader guide for teaching children, and a soon to be posted "at home" study guide for families. Also a DVD and CD-ROM set are available with all materials necessary to set up the study and emphasis in the local church. All materials are available from Cokesbury, and the at-home on-line study will be available on the Cokesbury website beneath the printed material offerings or at the following link http://images.umph.org/misc/3SRulesConversationGuide.pdf.

Blessings to you,

Bishop Marcus Matthews

And the New York West Area Cabinet:  Rev. Larry Baird, Rev. Ted Anderson, Rev. Natalie Hanson, Rev. Cathy Stengel, Rev. Richard Barton, Rev. Beth Benham, Rev. Sung Ho Lee, Rev. Deborah O’Connor-Slater, Rev. David Underwood

----------------------------------------------------

-3-   CAMP ASBURY OPPORTUNITY:

In 2009, Camp Asbury would like to renew the tradition of having Volunteer Counselors working as part of the summer camp ministry program.  Our desire is to start with what I believe is a realistic number of Volunteer Counselors – 10.  We would like to have one male and one female counselor each week during the summer camp schedule (i.e., 2 each week, 10 total).  Volunteer Counselors can be either clergy or laity.  There will be a Volunteer Counselor Training Day on Saturday, May 2 that will be required of any Volunteer Counselors.  This training will begin at 9:00 am and go until 4:00 pm.  Volunteer Counselors will be provided with curriculum materials that will be used during the summer camp week, Counselor materials, and practical applications.  A part of this training will include a Child Protection component, and all volunteers will be required to pass a background check.

This is an attempt for Camp Asbury to get reconnected to volunteers from our local churches, and for persons from our local churches to become involved in this great opportunity of providing a meaningful summer camp experience for the children and youth of our churches.  We will need to recruit these 10 volunteers by April 15 at the latest, in order to make sure that we can provide enough counselors for our summer camp program and to provide the training event necessary.

If you are interested in being a part of this exciting opportunity to directly impact the lives of children and youth in our summer camp ministry, please contact Rev. Larry Wiliford, Director at Camp Asbury, for more information and an application form.

-------------------------------------------------------

-4-  TRANSFORMED LIVES    (from The Rev. Dan Finch):

So much talk about transformational churches.

Well, in my humble opinion, almost no one is transformed until they take an active part in their own spiritual development. That seldom happens to people whose idea of church is corporate worship and committee service. The class meetings of yesteryear were and the small groups of today are an essential component of a transformational church. A healthy small group will provide a safe place for people to discuss and deal with what is actually going on in their lives.  I’m not talking about a Bible study where all the discussion is abstract and generic, but an honest to God small group where people covenant to help each other be transformed by dealing with their own lives, the real Bible and God’s call to do real ministry.

In order to have healthy small groups you have to have well trained and supervised small group leaders. Karen and I will offer another small group leader training series to the churches of the Genesee Valley District this winter.  It will be on Thursday evenings from January 8 until March 26. I know, that’s choir night for me too, and I love the choir, but we are talking about transforming lives here.  We’ll meet here in Livonia at the parsonage – 39 Main Street -  from 7 until 8:30 each night. The cost is $30 per person for the two volume ChristCare leaders’ training manuals.  Please call me, Dan Finch – at 346-3511 or 346-6201 if you are going to attend so that I know how many cookies to ask Karen to make.

-1-  FINANCES – We are truly grateful for your faithful giving to the work of God’s kingdom on earth and our call to be part of that important work. Our Treasurer tells us that we need $3800 by the end of the month to pay the bills. We have three Sunday Offerings remaining in January. Help us be sure that they total at least $3800 by month’s end.

-2-  BASKETBALL – Perry United Methodist Church Adult Recreational Basketball is scheduled for Wednesdays starting January 14th from 7:30 to 9 pm in the Elementary Middle School Gym.  Questions can be directed to Scott Milhollen or Doug Wilson.

-3-  RELEASE TIME – In the next few weeks we will be examining the possibility of reviving our Wednesday classes in a different form; for example, learning centers, or cutting back on the ages eligible to come. For learning centers we would need more people but less work for each one. We would need persons with a specific talent (or willing to learn one) to take charge of a learning center. In that scenario, we could use a Story Center, Music Center, Craft Center and Food Center. The children would be divided into four groups with four children in each who would move between the learning centers. The same lesson would be learned from four different perspectives. Training would be provided and offers to help are warmly welcomed.

The morning service at 11:00 will feature our vocal choir, Christmas carols, and the Baptism of Tim and Diane’s son-in-law and grandson. What a morning this should be!  The evening service at 7:00 called Blue Christmas will feature comforting words, lighting of candles, and Holy Communion for anyone feeling alone or sad at holiday time. Human emotions are permitted as we worship and attempt to give away our sadness to God.

-3-  SPECIAL APPRECIATION is extended to Rev Wilder who just this past Wednesday played the part of baby Jesus in a scene created by the Release Time children. Come celebrate the birth of the Savior with your family and friends!
